How CBSE CGPA Works โ and How to Calculate It
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduced the Grading System for Classes 9 and 10 to reduce exam stress and provide a more holistic assessment. Instead of reporting raw marks, CBSE assigns grade points (from 2 to 10) based on mark ranges โ A1 for 91โ100, A2 for 81โ90, and so on.
The CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is simply the arithmetic mean of grade points across the main five subjects. If a student scores A1 (10), A1 (10), A2 (9), B1 (8), and B2 (7), the CGPA = (10+10+9+8+7) รท 5 = 8.8.
CBSE's official formula for converting CGPA to percentage is: Percentage = CGPA ร 9.5. A CGPA of 8.8 therefore equals 8.8 ร 9.5 = 83.6%. This formula is published in CBSE's official guidelines and is used by most universities and colleges for admission calculations.
Note: The CGPA grading system applies only to CBSE Classes 9 and 10. Classes 11 and 12 use a different marking system, and university/college results follow their institution's own grading policy.
