How to Check Your NSP Scholarship Status

From "Pending at Institute" to "Payment Released" โ€” a complete guide to understanding where your NSP application stands, what each status means, and what to do next.

How to Check Your Application Status on NSP

Track without logging in

You can also check a basic status without logging in using the "Track Your Application Status" option on the NSP home page โ€” you will need your Application ID and mobile number for this.

Understanding NSP Status Codes

Each status means something specific โ€” here is what each one means and what action (if any) you need to take:

Submitted / Pending at Institute
Your application has been submitted successfully and is waiting for your institution's NSP nodal officer to log in and verify it.
What to do
Follow up immediately with your institution's scholarship coordinator. This step does not happen automatically โ€” the institute must actively log in to NSP and verify your application. Give them your Application ID and ask for a timeline.
Institute Verified / Pending at District / State
Your institution has verified your application and it has been forwarded to the district or state nodal officer for review.
What to do
No action needed from you at this stage. The state nodal officer will review and either approve or mark the application as defective. Monitor your status regularly on NSP.
Approved
Your application has been fully approved at all levels. Your scholarship amount has been or will be released via PFMS to your Aadhaar-linked bank account.
What to do
Check your bank account for credit. If you do not receive the amount within a few weeks of approval, track the payment on the PFMS portal (pfms.nic.in) using your Aadhaar number or Application ID.
Defective
Your application has an issue identified by the institute or state nodal officer โ€” such as missing documents, mismatched details, or an invalid certificate. The application has been sent back for correction.
What to do
Log in to NSP immediately, go to your application, and read the specific defect reason carefully. Correct the issue (re-upload a document, fix a detail) and resubmit within the correction window. Defective applications expire if not corrected in time.
Rejected
Your application has been rejected. The reason will be specified on the NSP portal.
What to do
Read the rejection reason. If it appears to be an error (e.g., your institution claims they didn't verify when they did), contact the NSP helpline or raise a grievance on NSP. If the rejection is due to ineligibility, review the scheme criteria and consider whether another scheme applies.
Payment Failed
The scholarship was approved but the PFMS payment transfer failed โ€” usually due to Aadhaar-bank account linking issues, incorrect account details, or a frozen account.
What to do
Check your bank account's Aadhaar seeding status. Visit your bank branch with your Aadhaar card and ask them to verify/re-seed the Aadhaar. Then contact the NSP helpline to request payment re-initiation.

How to Check Payment Status via PFMS

PFMS (Public Financial Management System) is the payment backend for NSP. Once your application is approved, the money flows from the government to your account via PFMS. You can independently verify payment status here even before the money appears in your bank account.

1
Go to pfms.nic.in
2
Click on "Know Your Payment" or "Track DBT Status"
3
Enter your Aadhaar number or NSP Application ID as prompted
4
The status will show whether payment has been "Processed", "Transferred", "Failed", or is pending
5
If payment shows "Transferred" but hasn't arrived, note the UTR/transaction reference number and visit your bank branch with it
PFMS Portal

Visit pfms.nic.in โ€” it is the official Government of India payment tracking portal. No fee or login is required to check payment status.

Common Payment Issues and Solutions

Even after approval, payment issues can arise. Here are the most common problems and how to resolve them.

๐Ÿ’ณ Application Approved But Money Not Received

Check PFMS (pfms.nic.in) to see if payment has been initiated. If PFMS shows "Transferred" but you haven't received it, visit your bank branch with the PFMS UTR number and ask them to trace the credit. It may have gone to a dormant or wrong account if details were entered incorrectly.

๐Ÿ”— Aadhaar-Bank Seeding Failure

If PFMS shows "Failed" for your payment, the most common cause is that your bank account is not properly seeded with Aadhaar, or the name on Aadhaar doesn't match the bank account. Visit your bank branch with your Aadhaar to re-seed the account, then contact the NSP helpline to request re-initiation of the payment.

๐Ÿฆ Wrong Bank Account Entered

If you entered an incorrect account number or IFSC during application, the money may have gone elsewhere or bounced back. Contact the NSP helpline (0120-6619540) with your Application ID to report the error. The money is typically returned to the government treasury in case of a failed transfer and can be re-initiated after correction.

โณ Long Wait After State Approval

After state approval, payment release can take several weeks depending on fund release cycles and PFMS batch processing schedules. This is normal. If it has been more than 2โ€“3 months after the state approved your application and the money has still not arrived, contact the NSP helpline or your state's scholarship grievance portal.
