3 Scholarship Schemes

NSP Scholarships for Minority Students

The Ministry of Minority Affairs operates three schemes on NSP covering six notified minority communities: Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, and Jain students. The pre-matric scheme is the most inclusive, starting from Class 1 and having a strict income ceiling of ₹1 lakh. The post-matric scheme extends to undergraduate and postgraduate level with a ₹2 lakh ceiling. For students in professional and technical courses, the Merit-cum-Means Scholarship offers the highest amounts — up to ₹30,000 per year plus course fees — combining both merit and financial need criteria. All three schemes disburse funds via PFMS directly to Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.

Who Qualifies

  • Must belong to one of the six notified minority communities: Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, or Jain
  • Income limit varies: ₹1 lakh for pre-matric, ₹2 lakh for post-matric, ₹2.5 lakh for Merit-cum-Means
  • Must be enrolled in a recognised institution at the relevant level
  • Minimum 50% marks in previous examination (waived for Class 1 entry)
  • Cannot hold two central minority scholarships simultaneously

Documents Commonly Required

Most schemes in this category require the following documents. Some schemes may need additional certificates — check each scheme's detail page for specifics.

  • Minority community certificate (or self-declaration affidavit as per state rules)
  • Income certificate from competent authority
  • Aadhaar card
  • Aadhaar-seeded bank passbook
  • Bonafide / enrolment certificate
  • Previous year marksheet
Tip for Minority Students

Do not assume that belonging to a minority community automatically qualifies you — the community must appear in the central government's notified minority list. Jain students, who were added as a minority community relatively recently, sometimes find their community certificates rejected; check the latest Ministry of Minority Affairs notification if you face this issue.
