About This Scholarship

The Pre-Matric Scholarship for OBC students, administered by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, extends financial support to Other Backward Classes students from primary school through Class 10. It addresses the high dropout rate in the OBC community at the foundational schooling stage by providing a maintenance allowance and a book grant. States receive central funds and are responsible for implementing the scheme through their State Nodal Officers, so actual disbursal timelines can vary by state. Eligibility mirrors the SC/ST pre-matric scheme in structure but requires an OBC certificate issued under the central list.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must belong to a community listed in the central OBC list
  • Enrolled in Class 1 to Class 10 at a recognised school
  • Annual family income must not exceed ₹2.5 lakh
  • Not availing any other pre-matric scholarship from central government
  • Must be an Indian citizen residing in India

How Much You Get

This scheme provides Up to ₹750/month to eligible students. Income must not exceed ₹2.5 lakh/year from all sources, as certified by a competent authority. Scholarship money is disbursed directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account via PFMS — no institution or intermediary handles the funds.

Amounts may vary between day scholars and hostellers in schemes that have both categories. Always check the official scheme guidelines on scholarships.gov.in for the current year's amount structure, as rates are subject to periodic revision by the government.

Documents Required

  • OBC certificate (central list) from Tehsildar or equivalent
  • Income certificate from competent authority
  • School bonafide / enrolment certificate
  • Previous year marksheet
  • Aadhaar card
  • Bank passbook (student's or parent's account)

All documents must be uploaded in the format specified by NSP (usually JPG or PDF, under 200KB per file). Ensure scans are clear and legible — blurry uploads are a common cause of application defects.

Insider Tip

OBC certificates must be from the central OBC list, not just the state list. The two lists differ, and many applications are rejected because the community appears in the state OBC list but not the central list. Verify your community's central list status at the MSJE website before applying.
