National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMSS)
About This Scholarship
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) is a Central Sector scheme launched by the Ministry of Education to support academically talented students from economically weaker families, helping them stay in school from Class 9 all the way through Class 12. The scheme is unique because it requires students to qualify a state-level selection examination conducted by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) at the end of Class 8 โ unlike most NSP schemes where eligibility is solely income and document-based. One lakh scholarships are awarded every year at โน12,000 per year (โน1,000 per month), disbursed directly to the student's Aadhaar-linked bank account via PFMS. The scheme specifically targets students in government, government-aided, and local body schools โ private unaided school students are not eligible. At the secondary level, students must pass in the first attempt with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST) to continue receiving the scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must have qualified the NMMS state-level selection examination conducted by SCERT while studying in Class 8
- Studying in a government, government-aided, or local body school โ private unaided school students are not eligible
- Annual family income from all sources must not exceed โน3.5 lakh
- At least 55% marks in Class 7 at the time of the state examination (50% for SC/ST students)
- Must pass Class 10 and 12 in the first attempt with at least 60% marks to continue renewal (55% for SC/ST)
- Not enrolled in any Navodaya Vidyalaya, Sainik School, or residential school where the state government pays all fees
How Much You Get
This scheme provides โน12,000/year to eligible students. Income must not exceed โน3.5 lakh/year from all sources, as certified by a competent authority. Scholarship money is disbursed directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account via PFMS โ no institution or intermediary handles the funds.
Amounts may vary between day scholars and hostellers in schemes that have both categories. Always check the official scheme guidelines on scholarships.gov.in for the current year's amount structure, as rates are subject to periodic revision by the government.
Documents Required
- NMMS state selection examination admit card and result / award letter
- Income certificate from competent authority
- Aadhaar card
- Bank account passbook (Aadhaar-seeded)
- School enrolment / bonafide certificate
- Class 7 marksheet (for fresh applicants)
- Previous year marksheet with required percentage (for renewal)
All documents must be uploaded in the format specified by NSP (usually JPG or PDF, under 200KB per file). Ensure scans are clear and legible โ blurry uploads are a common cause of application defects.
The NMMS entrance exam is administered by your state's SCERT and varies in pattern and difficulty by state โ check your SCERT's official website for the syllabus and previous years' question papers. Scoring above the cut-off in the exam is only step one; you also need to ensure your income certificate is ready when you apply on NSP after getting selected. The scholarship lapses if you fail a class or score below 60% (55% for SC/ST) โ there is no provision for re-continuation after a lapse.
