Appropriate Government
"Appropriate Government" means: the Central Government for centrally funded schools (like Kendriya Vidyalayas) and Union Territory schools; the State Government for all other schools within the state.
"appropriate Government" meansβ (i) in relation to a school established, owned, controlled or substantially financed by funds provided directly or indirectly by the Central Government, or a school belonging to any other Union Territory, the Central Government; (ii) in relation to a school, other than the school referred to in sub-clause (i), established, owned, controlled or substantially financed by funds provided directly or indirectly by the State Government, the State Government.

This term determines WHO is legally responsible for a given school. When a school violates RTE, the "appropriate government" is the body you hold accountable. For most schools in most states, this is the State Government.
