Section 2(a) of the RTE Act

Appropriate Government

"Appropriate Government" means: the Central Government for centrally funded schools (like Kendriya Vidyalayas) and Union Territory schools; the State Government for all other schools within the state.

"Appropriate Government" means: the Central Government for centrally funded schools (like Kendriya Vidyalayas) and Union Territory schools; the State Government for all other schools within the state.

This term determines WHO is legally responsible for a given school. When a school violates RTE, the "appropriate government" is the body you hold accountable. For most schools in most states, this is the State Government.

Examples
  • For a Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV): Central Government is the appropriate government
  • For a Navodaya Vidyalaya: Central Government
  • For a Delhi government school: Central Government (Delhi is a UT)
  • For a Tamil Nadu government school: Tamil Nadu State Government
  • For a private unaided school in Maharashtra: Maharashtra State Government
