Local Authority

"Local authority" includes: village panchayats (gram panchayats), Zila Parishads, Municipal Councils, Municipal Corporations, and similar bodies. These are the ground-level government bodies directly responsible for schools in their area.

Local authorities have 13 specific duties under Section 9. They are also the first point of contact for filing RTE complaints under Section 32. Understanding which local authority covers your area is the first step in exercising your rights.
