Top Class Education Scheme — SC Students
About This Scholarship
The Top Class Education Scheme for SC Students is the most financially generous central scholarship for Scheduled Caste students, covering the full non-refundable tuition fee and providing a monthly maintenance allowance for students admitted to India's 266 premier higher education institutions. The list of covered institutions includes IITs, IIMs, NITs, AIIMS, law schools (NLUs), and other institutions of national importance notified by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. The income ceiling is ₹6 lakh per year — notably higher than other SC/ST schemes — reflecting the reality that admission to premier institutions often requires years of expensive coaching that shifts the income profile of eligible families upward. Day scholars receive ₹2,220 per month as maintenance, while hostellers receive ₹3,480 per month. Books and stationery are covered up to ₹3,000 per year.
Eligibility Criteria
- Student must belong to a Scheduled Caste as certified by a Tehsildar or equivalent competent authority
- Admitted to a full-time degree programme at one of the 266 notified premier institutions under the scheme
- Annual family income from all sources must not exceed ₹6 lakh
- Only one student per family can avail this scholarship at any given time
- Must not be availing any other central government scholarship simultaneously
- Covers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral-level programmes at eligible institutions
How Much You Get
This scheme provides Full tuition fee + ₹2,220/month maintenance to eligible students. Income must not exceed ₹6 lakh/year from all sources, as certified by a competent authority. Scholarship money is disbursed directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account via PFMS — no institution or intermediary handles the funds.
Amounts may vary between day scholars and hostellers in schemes that have both categories. Always check the official scheme guidelines on scholarships.gov.in for the current year's amount structure, as rates are subject to periodic revision by the government.
Documents Required
- Caste certificate from Tehsildar or equivalent (SC)
- Income certificate from competent authority (current year)

All documents must be uploaded in the format specified by NSP (usually JPG or PDF, under 200KB per file). Ensure scans are clear and legible — blurry uploads are a common cause of application defects.
Not all IITs, IIMs, or NITs are covered — only those specifically notified under this scheme's list of 266 institutions. Before applying, verify your institution appears in the Ministry's official list (available on the MSJE website). The income ceiling of ₹6 lakh is one of the highest for any SC scheme, which makes it accessible even if your family income is in the middle range. Apply as soon as your admission is confirmed — the window does not wait for students who delay.
