PM Internship Scheme: How to Get Shortlisted — A Complete Application Guide

Thousands register for the PM Internship Scheme and hear nothing back. The problem isn't their background — it's their strategy. Here's how to apply smarter and dramatically improve your shortlisting odds.

Every year, thousands of young Indians register on the PM Internship portal and never hear back. They meet the eligibility criteria. They submitted their documents. They waited. And nothing happened. I've spoken with many of these candidates, and almost every time, the problem wasn't their background — it was their application strategy.

The PM Internship Scheme selects candidates for internships at 500+ top Indian companies. There are more than enough openings. But the candidates who get shortlisted aren't necessarily the most qualified — they're the ones who applied smartly. This guide is about becoming one of them.

Complete Your Profile First — Completely

This sounds obvious, but the data tells a different story. A significant portion of registered candidates have incomplete profiles when they apply. Missing education details, blank skill fields, no preference selected — these applications are filtered out before a human ever sees them. Before you apply to a single internship, spend 30 minutes making sure every field in your profile is filled.

Your education details should be precise: institution name, degree, marks or grade, year of passing. If you've done any certification course — even a short online course in Excel or Tally — add it. Under skills, list everything relevant: communication, Excel, data entry, two-wheeler riding if you're applying to field roles, language proficiency. Many candidates underestimate how much skill completeness matters. Companies filtering candidates on the portal often use skills as a first screen.

Your profile photo should be professional — not a selfie, not a WhatsApp picture. A plain background, decent lighting, and a neutral expression. It takes five minutes and signals seriousness. It matters more than candidates think.

Apply to 5 — But Choose Them Deliberately

The scheme allows you to apply to up to 5 internship positions. This is not a lottery — treat it like a job application. Before you apply anywhere, answer three questions: Does this company match my education background? Is this city workable for me? Do I meet any additional requirements they've listed?

✦ ✦ ✦

The most common mistake is applying to 5 roles at random, or only applying to 1-2 famous companies and leaving the rest blank. Both approaches waste your chances. The optimal strategy: apply to 2 companies in your strongest sector, 1-2 companies in a secondary sector that's also relevant, and 1 company in a location that's your strongest preference. This spreads your chances while keeping each application credible.

For sector matching: if you have a B.Sc. in Chemistry, pharmaceutical and chemical companies should be your primary targets — you'll rank higher against candidates with less relevant backgrounds. If you're a commerce graduate, banking and FMCG sales roles are your strong suit. If you're from an ITI or diploma background, manufacturing, auto, and power sector roles are specifically designed for you. Playing to your actual strength dramatically improves shortlisting odds.

Location Strategy — Be Specific and Realistic

Many candidates set their location preference vaguely or pick only metro cities. Both hurt your chances. Metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru) have the most applicants per opening. Tier 2 cities (Jaipur, Lucknow, Bhopal, Coimbatore) and industrial towns (Jamshedpur, Vadodara, Rourkela) have fewer applicants but equally real internships.

If you're from a Tier 2 or Tier 3 city and can make a local internship work, prioritise local companies. Not only is your competition lower — a Bhilai-based steel plant posting has far fewer applicants than an HDFC Bank role in Mumbai — but your personal knowledge of the area is a genuine advantage. You're a credible local candidate, which many companies prefer for branch-level and site-level roles.

"For banking internships specifically: SBI branches in rural and semi-urban areas are chronically short of applicants."

For banking internships specifically: SBI branches in rural and semi-urban areas are chronically short of applicants. If you're from a district headquarter town and willing to work at an SBI branch nearby, your application is likely to succeed. The same logic applies to insurance companies with rural distribution networks.

Prepare a Clean, Honest Document Set

One reason candidates fail after shortlisting is document mismatch — information on the portal doesn't match their actual certificates. Keep your Aadhaar, education marksheets, income certificate, and bank account details ready and accurate. If your name appears differently in different documents (a common issue with Aadhaar vs marksheets), note this and have both ready to explain.

The income certificate is often the most problematic document. The scheme requires family income below ₹8 lakh per annum. This is assessed based on the certificate issued by your state government (tehsildar or SDM). If you don't have a current one, get it before applying — the process takes 1-3 weeks in most states. An application that can't be verified stalls immediately.

Don't Wait — Apply in the First Window

The PM Internship portal opens applications in batches. Companies list their openings, candidates apply, and selections happen. Candidates who apply in the first week of a batch consistently report higher response rates than those who apply near the deadline. Companies shortlist on a rolling basis — early applicants are reviewed before the pool fills up.

Set a reminder for when applications open. Check the official portal (pminternship.mca.gov.in) regularly. When a new batch opens, apply within the first 3-4 days. This single timing change significantly improves your odds.

After Applying — Follow Up the Right Way

Once you've applied, you may be contacted by the company's HR team for a verification call or document submission. Respond within 24 hours. A candidate who takes 3 days to respond to a shortlisting call often loses their spot to the next person on the list.

✦ ✦ ✦

If you haven't heard back after 3-4 weeks, check your portal status. If your application shows as 'under review', wait. If it shows as 'rejected', don't be discouraged — you can apply to the next batch. Many candidates succeed on their second or third application cycle after they've refined their approach.

The PM Internship Scheme is a genuine opportunity — one of the largest structured internship programmes ever launched in India. With the right strategy, your profile, your background, and your ambition are more than enough. The difference between candidates who get shortlisted and those who don't is usually not their resume — it's their approach.
