Elementary education = Class 1 to Class 8. This is the complete scope of the RTE Act's coverage.

The RTE Act's right to free education covers Classes 1 through 8 only. Secondary education (Classes 9โ€“12) and higher education are outside this Act. The no-detention policy, no-Board-exam rule, and all other provisions apply to this range.

Examples
  • Class 1 to Class 8 = elementary education under RTE
  • Class 9 onwards = outside the RTE Act
  • A child completing Class 8 has completed their RTE-protected education
